The sensor consists of compact active optical profilometers (1). A touch (3) or sound (42) interface provides real-time transmission of measurement data through the skin. The data is coded to make it intelligible to the brain without using a large number of cells. The measurement parameters (resolution, angular field, scanning, direction) are determined by the user and partially automated, and the system as a whole is controlled by a portable electronic device (2).
