A method and apparatus enabling real-time three-dimensional recognition by a visually challenged person of outlines, reflectivities and movements in his or her surroundings. Spatial data is obtained by high-resolution range (D) and reflectivity (G) measurement scanning of obstacles in a scanned area to give sectional range (47) and reflectivity (48) planes. The sensor consists of compact active optical profilometers (1). A touch (3) or sound (42) interface provides real-time transmission of measurement data through the skin. The data is coded to make it intelligible to the brain without using a large number of cells. The measurement parameters (resolution, angular field, scanning, direction) are determined by the user and partially automated, and the system as a whole is controlled by a portable electronic device (2).
