Reducing the COD of photographic effluents that have been treated with H2O2 comprises contacting the effluents with an H2O2 decomposition catalyst. Pref. the effluents have a pH of 9-13. The catalyst comprises (a), Pt, Pd, Ir, Rh, Re, Au, Ag, Cu, Cr, Os, Co, Fe, Mo, W, Mn, Ce or Th, esp. Pt block or Ag on an inert support, or (b) particulate carbon, esp. powdered or granular active carbon. The catalyst contact time is 10-180 min.
