The method involves recording information such as timing data in a read/write memory (12) with a programmable control supplied with current (2) by a supply circuit. If the supply voltage fails, the read/write memory is supplied with current for at least a brief interval by a capacitor or a coil (14). When failure in the supply voltage is detected, the data held in the read/write memory is written into a permanent, electrically erasable memory which stores the data during the absence of voltage. The data is written into the permanent memory in serial format.
