A silver halide photographic material is developed and fixed by contacting the exposed material with a developer which is inactive below a given PH, e.g. pH 8, below said given pH and then contacting such material with a silver halide solvent above said given pH. The silver halide material may be an emulsion or a vacuum deposited layer of silver halide. Specified developing agents are 1, 5-dihydroxy-naphthalene, catechol, p-phenylene diamine, o and p-aminophenol, phydroxyphenylamino acetic acid, N-methyl-pamino-phenolsulphate, sodium and potassium erythrobates, isoascorbic acid, hydroquinone, substituted hydroquinones, and 1 -phenyl-3 - pyrazolidone and substituted derivatives thereof. Specified silver halide solvents are alkali metal and ammonium thiosulphates and thiocyanates, cyanides, thiourea, thioglycolic acid and alkali metal thioglycolates. The developer bath may contain such acids as sulphuric, hydrochloric, citric, acetic and formic acid. Alkaline materials used in the silver halide solvent solution are alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates, 2-diethylaminoethanol and monoethanolamine. Other ingredients of the developer and solvent solutions are surfactants and gelatine hardeners e.g. glutaraldehyde bis-bisulphite.</p> |
