PURPOSE: To provide a rod baffle ring suitable for retrofitting an existing boiler shell heat exchanger without disassembling a tube bundle and a method for retrofitting the existing boiler shell heat exchanger to incorporate rod baffle support members therein. CONSTITUTION: A rod baffle ring 46 comprises a first semi-circular member 48 having a first and a second end portions, a second semi-circular member 50 having a first and a second end portions, and a hinge 56 for rotatably attaching the first end portion of the first semi-circular member to the first end portion of the second semi-circular member. The baffle ring 46 can be opened on hinges to allow installation on the existing tube bundle and closed on hinges to provide a completed rod baffle ring around the tube bundle.
