PURPOSE:To reduce a cost of a character display device used for an equipment such as a copying machine. CONSTITUTION:Only a font of a character used for display is stored in a system ROM 2 in order of a standard code such as JIS, and respective characters are made 47 pieces of groups 94 characters each in a first byte in the case of the JIS code, and a control table consisting of 12 bytes of bit lines showing the presence of respective fonts of 94 characters and two bytes of bit lines showing the head address of the initial font is stored beforehand. Then, when the JIS code is inputted, the control table of the group corresponding to the first byte is referred to and the font of a target character is read out from the system ROM 2 based on the number of bits showing the presence of the font until the bit corresponding to a inputted second byte in the table and the head address of the group, and is written in the address in a display RAM 4 corresponding to a display position on an LCD 6 to be displayed on the LCD 6. |
