The device has a hollow body (1), part of which is of trapezoidal longitudinal cross-section. Within the body slide two or more plates (2) of wedge shape, which are smooth on their outer surfaces and ribbed or toothed on their inner surfaces. A pressure plate (3) bears against the wedge plates under the action of a screw (4) to which it is attached. The screw passes through and engages a threaded hole in the body. The wedge plates are retained transversely against the trapezoidal walls of the body by pins (6) which are free to slide longitudinally in slots (7) formed in the walls. The screw is connected via a universal joint (8) to a rotary driver capable of exerting a high traction force on the body.
