The apparatus has a machine control part (20) and an image control part (22, 29). The data is printed electrophotographically. The apparatus also includes a device (28) for detecting calls to a fax receiver and a modem to demodulate data transmitted from a remote system and to modulate data from a local computer (200). The modem (26) starts fax reception when a call is detected and transmits the demodulated data to the machine control part (20) or to the local computer (200) and transmits the data from the computer (200) to the modem (26). The data is modulated there and is transmitted to the remote system (300). Another device (32) forms an interface with the machine control part (20) under control of the control unit.
