The appts. for prodn. of protective covers with variable length made of strip materials (esp. steels) by helical winding of such materials comprises a feed mechanism (13), a guide mechanism (16,17) for establishment of a strip guide plane E-E, and a bending mechanism (26) which produces a bending radius and is adjustable (for different bending radii and helix angles of the strip) about two mutually perpendicular axes by means of control templates. The appts. is characterised by the fact that the control templates are mounted on a control carriage (9) which is longitudinally displaceable dependent on the unclamped length of the protective cover.
