IMPROVED METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DATA ACCESS IN MULTIPROCESSOR DIGITAL DATA PROCESSING SYSTEMS

An improved system for database quert processing by means of query decomposition which intercepts database queries prior to procesing by a database management system (DBMS) (FIG 3A). The system decomposes at least selected queries to generate multiple subqueries by application in parallel to the DBMS in lieu of the intercepted query (FIG 3B). Responses by the DBMS to the subqueries are assembled (74B) by the system to generate a final response. The system also provides improved methods and apparatus for storage and retrieval of records from a database using the DBMS's cluster storage and index retrieval facilities in combination with a smaller than usual hash bucket size (76B,76C).
