An oblong slide (10) is stiff and transparent, and for example, is of glass. In its upper surface is a recessed row of separate, adjacent sample cells (20, 21), with plane floors (22), parallel to the base. Entry regions near the long edge allow a fluid drop to be drawn into the cell by capillary action. A rectangular cover slip the length of the slide, but narrower, rests above the cells, recessed centrally into the upper surface of the slide, below lands (13) on the long sides. Each cell has its own outwardly directed sloping ramp (25). Partitions (23), partially round the cells, at the ends and between the rows, contact the cover slip (40).
