Compressed air energy storage system

A compressed air energy storage system has a compressed air tank (123) fed by a set of compressors (111,112). There are coolers (115,116) for the air exiting from the compressors. A motor-generator unit drives the compressors and in turn is driven as a generator by a set of expansion turbines (113,114) fed by the compressed air. There are other coolers (117,118) assigned to the turbines which use the waste expanded air from the turbines for cold generation. There is a preheater (119) for the air leaving the pressure tank and entering the first turbine and the inter- turbine cooler (117) can be reversed in operation to act also as a preheater.
