The rotor 2 of a synchronous dynamo electric machine, e.g. A.C. motor or generator, has a damping cage winding formed by high conductivity metal conductor bars 5 which close gas, e.g. air or hydrogen, cooling channels 4 within the rotor teeth 16, extend axially substantially the full length of the rotor core slotted part, and at each end are electrically connected by high conductivity metal annular members which extend circumferentially around the rotor periphery and overlie the bar ends. The gas enters the channels at both ends and escapes through apertures 8 to the airgap around the rotor, and the bars may be divided at 12 into two overlying strips. In Fig. 1, (not shown), the annular members 6 are shrunk on to the bar ends possibly with an interconnecting silver pellet and a reinforcing magnetic steel ring, whilst in Fig. 2 (not shown) they comprise flanges 13 of end winding retaining rings 14.</p>
