A modular element (4, 6) has intermediate joints (20, 22, 24, 26) and may be joined to other modular elements (4, 6) by connecting joints (28, 30). Not all axes of the joints (20, 22, 28, 30) can be parallel to each other. Also disclosed is a kinematic module (2, 79) with at least two modular elements (4, 6) whose joints (20-30) are linked to a substantially stiff connecting piece (8, 14) and/or to at least one substantially stiff free endpiece (10, 12, 16, 18). The modular elements (4, 6) are in turn interconnected by the connecting joints (28, 30) into a ring-shaped assembly, in which the axes of the joints (20-30) are arranged in relation to each other so that the kinematic module (2; 79) may always take different geometric shapes and in no geometric shape all axes of the joints (20-30) are parallel to each other. Also disclosed is a modular assembly (44, 56, 62, 66, 76) composed of at least two kinematic modules (2; 79), as well as a building set with at least one modular element (4, 6), at least one kinematic module (2; 79) and/or at least one modular assembly (44, 56, 62, 66, 76). Finally, a specially designed rotating joint is also disclosed for the kinematic module (2; 79), the modular element or the modular assembly.
