[Also in Division C3] A modified carbon black for incorporation in synthetic rubber vulcanizates is produced by reacting an unmodified black having at least 1% of non-aqueous volatile matter, a surface area of 60 to 400 square meters per gram, and a particle diameter of between 10 and 50 millimicrons with an amine of formula NH 2 - R-NH 2 or NH 2 -R-NH-R-NH 2 where R is an alkylene radical having two to five carbon atoms, the modified black containing no free amine and containing 0.5 to 5 parts of combined nitrogen per 100 parts of the modified black. The most preferred black has a volatile content between 1 and 5%, a surface area of 60-200 square metres per gram, a particle diameter of 20-50 millimicrons, a pH in aqueous slurry of 7-9 and is modified by reaction with 1,2- or 1,3-propylenediamine or with 3,31-diamine-dipropylamine and contains 1.5 to 3.5 parts of nitrogen per 100 parts of modified black. The modification of the carbon black may be carried out by reaction with the amine in the gaseous state at elevated temperature preferably in a closed system to avoid loss of amine, or by contacting the black with a solution of the amine, preferably at a temperature between the boiling-point of the amine and of the solvent-water, alcohol, benzene and hexane being specified solvents. |
