Positively driven continuously variable speed drive unit. The drive unit is characterized in that it comprises a body (20) supporting a first plurality of pivotally mounted coplanar gears (14, 16), said gears (14, 16) forming together a ring gear (6, 8), wherein a belt (10, 12) meshes with said ring gear to couple it with any one of the driving (2) or driven (4) units; means (18) for varying the diameter of said ring gear (6, 8), and means (32, 34) for pivotally locking the gears (14, 16) in relation to one another so that they are permanently kept in phase with the transmission belt (10, 12), said locking means (32, 34) comprising a belt surrounding the ring gear (6, 8) by meshing with said gears (4, 6). The invention is useful for mechanical transmission systems.
