The three and a half inch disc has the usual cover with read access slot (5) and a dedicated smart chip (6) on its outer surface. The chip contains encoding data for accessing data on the disc. The chip may also be a single chip microcomputer. The encoding mechanism may be used for copy protection, limiting the number of copies made, or applying other constraints.
