An electrical signal cable having a braided or served wire shield wherein the wire strands of braid or served wire shield include at least one wire of larger gauge size, the larger wire being used to terminate the shield. The braid or served wire shield is applied in the normal manner known in the art, which includes winding a plurality of individual strands of relatively small gauge size onto bobbins which are mounted onto rotating or counter-rotating carriers which allow the individual wire strands to be paid off over the electrical signal cable in such a way as to provide a metal covering of the electrical signal cable of up to 100% coverage. The larger gauge size wire is applied as part of the overall shield, but is terminated as a drain wire, thus eliminating the need for a separate drain wire with its associated cost and weight. The larger wire is easily isolated from the bunch of strands which make up the shield, and eliminates the need to bunch all the strands together for the purpose of termination.
