A seat spring mat assembly is made by coating flat, zig-zag springs 24 with adhesive, applying the springs 24 to a fabric web 28, passing the web and springs through an oven 48 to set the adhesive and thereby bond the springs to the web, cutting the spring covered fabric to a desired length, and thereafter securing the cut length to a border frame 12. Individual springs 24 are automatically fed from magazines 32 to a conveyer comprising laterally spaced, endless chains 34 to be carried through adhesive applicator rollers 38 and wiping rollers 46 to be thereafter applied to a continuously advanced canvas web 28 guided to lie beneath the chain conveyer. After passing through the oven 48 the continuous strip is cut, at 52, to the desired length. The cut length is secured by metal clips 26 to a wire border frame 12 comprising U-shaped parts 14, 16 clipped together, as at 18. Additional wire supports 20 extend transversely of the springs 24 to underlie the latter and are secured to the frame 12 at their ends by clips 22. |
