A method and apparatus of measuring the preload clearance h in a double row rolling bearing comprises applying a first small load to races 3a, 3b having a preload clearance and measuring their relative position H1, then applying a second larger load and again measuring their relative position H2. Finally the clearance h is determined from its known relationship to the difference H2 - H1.
