A method and apparatus for measuring the preload gap of a double row rolling bearing, such that it is possible to accurately determine the preload to be obtained when an inner ring 8 is fully pressed onto the cylindrical surface 7 of a spindle 5 from a condition wherein rolling bodies or members 9 are in an unpreloaded condition prior to fully pressing the inner ring 8. The spindle 5 is concentrically disposed inside an outer ring 1 and the rolling bodies 9 are rotatably provided between raceways 2a, 2b and 6a, 6b defined by inner ring 8, spindle 5 and outer ring 1. The first displacement caused by displacing outer ring 1 with respect to spindle 5 and inner ring 8 whilst the latter is pressed onto surface 7 without any preloading to balls 9, can be measured. A second displacement is obtained by pressing inner ring 8 so as to apply a preload to bodies 9. The preload gap is the difference of the two displacements. <IMAGE> |
