In a load current monitoring system for traction batteries in electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, the load current is monitored in order to avoid damage to the battery as a result of overheating due to excessively high load currents and, if appropriate, the load current is reduced to a normal value which is permitted for continuous operation. The monitoring is activated if the load current exceeds a prescribed limit value which is an inverse function of temperature. The load current is however not reduced until the battery temperature exceeds a prescribed limit value. The arrangement described has a sensorto measure average battery temperature but goes on to provide a calculated temperature, for use as the control variable, taking into account heat balances for individual reaction zones of the battery. The monitoring is terminated as soon as both the average and calculated battery temperatures drop below a prescribed non-critical value. |
