Amino-multicarboxylate starch ether derivatives are provided having the following structure: <CHEM> wherein St-O represents a starch molecule, R is H or CH3; R' is H, CH3 or COOH; M is a cation; n is 2 or 3; and R'' is H or alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms. These starch derivatives are particularly useful as retention and strength aids in papermaking.
