CHMSL WITH COMBINATION OF REFLECTION AND DIFFUSION IMAGES

PURPOSE: To provide a holographic center high mounted stoplight for an automobile which can meet the defined angular coverage requirements with a bright region generally in the center of an angular field. CONSTITUTION: This holographic center high mounted stoplight system is provided with an illumination source for a reconstruction beam and a first array 31 of non-overlapping hologram and non-hologram cells arranged in a first pattern so that each hologram cell produces a specular image that is viewable in a first angular field pursuant to diffraction of the reconstruction beam. The system further includes a second array 32 of non-overlapping hologram and non-hologram cells arranged in a second pattern so that each hologram cell produces a diffuse image that is viewable in a second angular field pursuant to diffraction of the reconstruction beam. The specular images and diffuse images form stoplight illumination.
