PURPOSE: To ensure the safety of passengers in a collision and to provide moisture resistance to retaining pins for attaching a trim panel to the inner panel of an automobile by imparting an impact absorbing function to the pins. CONSTITUTION: Each retaining pin 18 for attaching a trim panel 16 to an inner panel 20 has a shaft 34 with a pointed end 38, from which a plurality of finger members 42 extend toward a base. A plurality of splines or fins 36 and an umbrella shaped water seal member 50 are further attached to the shaft. When the trim panel with the pin attached thereto is assembled into the inner panel, the end 38 serves to guide the inner panel into holes 40, the finger members function to firmly retain the pin there, and the water seal member prevents moisture from seeping through the holes to a passenger compartment. When impact is applied to a door in a collision or the like, the pins are pushed into the holes to shear or deform the splines to convert kinetic energy into heat energy so as to reduce the transmission of the impact. |
