PURPOSE: To form a carrier matrix having excellent mechanical strength and to sufficiently exhibit an exhaust gas purification function by supplying a brazing filler metal in a powder form to either of a flat steel sheet and corrugated steel sheet, arranging both steel sheets to a laminar form to form a honeycomb body, subjecting the honeycomb body to a heat treatment and brazing and depositing a substance for exhaust gas purification. CONSTITUTION: The pasty brazing filler metal 3 is applied to a belt-like material 33 of a narrow width in the longitudinal direction of the flat steel sheet 1 by using coating application rollers 32 and 32' from a storage container 31 packed with the pasty brazing filler metal 3 consisting of a binder and the solid powdery brazing filler metal. The supplied flat steel sheet 1 and the corrugated steel sheet 2 are alternately arranged to the laminar form and both steel sheets 1 and 2 are wound and formed, by which the honeycomb body of the honeycomb structure is obtained. Brazing is then executed by the heat treatment under the desired conditions, for example, at >=1100 deg.C at which the brazing filler metal melts and under a reducing atmosphere and further the catalyst substance for exhaust gas purification is deposited in an ordinary form on the brazed honeycomb body.
