Fibre optic pressure sensor in coil form for hydrophones

The sensor consists of an outer shell (1) contg. a coil of optical fibre (2) surrounding an inner core (5) which is more compliant. The optical fibres may be wound with adjacent turns close together or with turns spaced out on a tubular former. End caps (4) complete the assembly. Applied pressure (p) causes a tensor of anisotropic constraint in the fibre which may be measured externally.
