PURPOSE: To most efficiently convert non-polarized radiation emitted from a radiation source to circularly polarized radiation and to easily and inexpensively perform this conversion. CONSTITUTION: An illuminating device 7 is provided with a radiation source 3, which generates a non-polarized radiation beam 5, and cholestric mirrors 9 to 14 which separate the radiation beam 5 into two subbeams. A synthesized circular polarizer 35 is arranged between the radiation source 3 and the cholestric mirror 9. This polarizer 35 is provided with a polarized beam splitter 43 and polarization converters 51 and 53. Circularly polarized subbeams are modulated by picture display panels 27, 29, and 31, and thereafter, a picture is projected through a projection lens system 33. |
