A prosthetic ankle joint includes tibia and astragalus elements, each held in place by pointed nail-like pins embedded in spongy bone. The prosthetic tibia element is fixed by two pins inclined laterally, and the astragalus element by two pins inclined front to back. An intermediate articulation element is situated between the two, comprising: (a) one flat face in contact with the tibia element, (b) one curved face in contact with the astragalus, and (c) a V shaped region in the transverse plan, giving a natural range of movement. Also claimed are the instruments used to position the prosthesis and the method for doing so.
