Cpd. acting as initiator and transfer agent is of formula (I): T-E-I-E-T (I) T = transfer gp. enabling the cpd. to undergo chain transfer in free radical polymerisation; I = initiator residue giving free radicals on cleavage; and E = gp. isolating the radical centre formed on T associated during transfer w.r.t. interaction with I and speeding up decomposition of I by an intramolecular reaction. Also claimed are: (i) the prepn. of a cpd. of formula (IV) or (V) by reacting a cpd. of formula (VI) with N2H4 and NaCN in a base to give a cpd. of formula (VII), dehydrogenating to give a cpd. of formula (VIII) by using an aq. soln. of Br, then reacting with a cpd. of formula (IX) in the presence of a tert. amine to give cpd. (IV), or with a cpd. of formula (X) in the presence of only the tert. amine to give cpd. (V); and (2) the prepn. of monomers A and B of block copolymers by polymerising A in the presence of (I) at temp. T1 to give a macroinitiator of formula (XI), introducing B at temp. T2 to give a copolymer of formula (XII) or a mixt. of (XIII) and/or (XIV).
