A method using a transceiver to read out data stored in transponders, particularly duplex transponders with varying data encoding modes. The data received via the transceiver are digitised (11) and the data encoding mode is determined, whereafter a digital evaluation circuit (7) performs the various data evaluation functions on the basis of said mode. The method may also be used to read out data from alternately operating transponders.
