<p>An apparatus (10) convertible between chopping or shredding operations and grinding operations. The centrifugal grinder or chopper (21) includes two opposed plates (42, 80) with at least one plate rotating with respect to the other. A plurality of shearing plates (78) are rigidly but removably secured to one mounting plate (80) while a plurality of grinding segments (70) or chopping and shreddings knives (136) are rigidly but removably secured to the other mounting plate (42). Each shearing plate (78) includes a curved rib (88) extending outwardly toward the other mounting plate (42). When one of the mounting plates (42) is rotated with respect to the other, material (13) is forced centrifugally outward into spaces or grinding chamber segments (94) and chopped or ground before passing out of the spaces or grinding chamber segments (94) and into an outlet (23). An automatic gap adjustment mechanism (40) is further disclosed for setting the desired gap between the ribs (88) of the shearing plates (78) and the grinding segments (70) or chopping and shredding knives (136). A rotating material distributing plate (160) is further disclosed and is axially adjustable, for example, to accommodate wear of the grinding segments (70).</p> |
