<p>A system for sensing and displaying sensory information to a human operator comprising a world modeler adapted to receive sensory input from the operator over a communications medium. The world modeler modifies either a virtual world which is a mathematical model of an environment, or modifies a real world which is a remote real environment. The world modeler then sends sensory information from the real or virtual environments over the communication medium to the haptic system. The haptic system displays this sensory information to the human operator. The result is that the operator is able to manipulate a real or virtual environment remotely through the information sensed and displayed by the haptic system. The method provides for compression of the haptic information, reducing the bandwidth required to transmit sensory information between the haptic system and the world modeler.</p> |
