Knitted wire carrier used in weather seal comprises wire folded into a zigzag configuration so as to have parallel limbs interconnected at alternate ends by connecting regions carrying polymeric warp threads. Further polymeric warp threads knitted on the wire encompass the wire in its stitches and at least one shrinkable filament (46) is laid into at least two adjacent warp threads, the filament when heated shrinking to draw the at least two adjacent warp threads tightly against the wire. Also claimed is a weather seal for use on a motor vehicle incorporating the knitted wire which is coated with a thermoplastic or thermosetting elastomer. Also claimed is a method for mfg. the wire carrier by forming a wire on a knitter into a zigzag configuration having parallel limbs interconnected at alternate ends by connecting regions carrying polymeric warp threads, feeding polymeric warp threads to the knitter, feeding at least one meltable filament to the knitter, knitting the warp threads on the wires so that the wire is held within a stitch of each knitted row of warp yarn and the at least one shrinkable filament is simultaneously laid into at least two adjacent warp threads, and heating the wire carrier to a predetermined temp. to draw the warp threads tightly against the wire by shrinking the at least one shrinkable filament. |
