[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A spinnable resinous dispersion includes as the continuous phase 75 to 60% (wt.) a polyamide containing 4 to 11 C atoms per N atom and having a M.W. of 16,000 to 30,000, a M.P. of at least 175‹ C. and a moisture content below 0À05%, and as the disperse phase a poly- (alkylene arylene dicarboxylate) of M.W. 16,000 to 30,000, M.P. at least 200‹ C. and moisture content below 0À05%. The particle size of the disperse phase may be below 5 microns. Either polymer may be end-blocked but the compositions of Specification 1,103,475 are disclaimed. Numerous polyamides and polyesters and end-blocking compounds therefor are mentioned; in the examples nylon 6 or 7 and polyethylene terephthalate are used. In Ex. 3 the polyamide is stabilized with copper acetate and NH 4 Cl and in Ex. 5 a synthetic wax sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Acrawax C" is included as a spinning lubricant. In spinning the dispersions the time in the melt stage is preferably kept to a minimum to minimize interaction; the spinning procedure (see below) is described more fully in the examples and the effect of variation of the time in the melt stage illustrated. Spinning procedure.-In examples the compositions are dried to a moisture content not exceeding 0À01% and the melt, having a disperse phase particle size of 2-5 microns is spun, after a melt dwell time of 3-9 mins., through a spinneret having openings of 20-40 mils at 530-535‹ F. The yarn collected is drawn over a pin and plate at 325-375‹ F. at draw ratios of 4À7-5À4 to give yarn of tensile strength 5À9-9À2 g./d. The spun products, preferably coated with a conventional dip may be used as tyre cords. The cords preferably have a denier of 1600 to 6000 and may be monofilaments or multi-ply filaments. |
