Method of presenting optical information to rail passengers

The method involves presenting optical information as a row of pictures (12) appropriately spaced along the route followed by passengers in a moving rail carriage (11). A stroboscopic lighting unit (13) illuminates the pictures with a time period t given by the equation t = d/v, where d is the spacing of the pictures and v is the velocity of the moving passengers. The stroboscopic lighting unit may take the form of a chain of lights driven by a control unit with a velocity sensor and a unit to detect presence of vehicle. If a row of identical pictures is used, the passengers will see a static image. Alternatively, a series of changing pictures may be used to create the illusion of a moving image.
