The invention concerns a process for the treatment of effluent by growing algae in a growth stage under aerobic conditions in a saline medium, treating a saline effluent containing organic degradable material with the algae in the presence of bacteria capable of digesting at least some of the organic material and separating the liquid from the solid material. The algae may belong to genus Dunaliella of Spirulina. The effluent may be a tannery effluent, or an organic sewage effluent, particularly secondary sewage sludge. Addition of a flocculant followed by filtration may be involved. |
