A positive metallising method for metallising a composite plastic workpiece containing a polymer and grains of one or more oxides. The method comprises a first step of exposing a workpiece surface to be metallised to a light beam from an excimer laser, a second step of immersing the exposed workpiece in at least one autocatalytic bath containing metal ions and no previously added palladium, and depositing the ions in a layer on the exposed surface, and a third step of heat treating the metallised plastic workpiece to cause diffusion of the deposited metal throughout the plastic.
