The invention relates to a mechanical valve tappet which is arranged in a guide bore of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and consists of a cup-shaped housing which comprises a hollow-cylindrical wall (1) which is closed off at one end by a base (2) against the outside of which a timing cam runs while, resting against the inside of the base by means of a flat front face, there is an adjusting element (5) which is in contact, via a front face plane-parallel to the abovementioned front face, with the end of a valve stem of a gas exchange valve. To form a constructional unit, the adjusting element (5) is designed as a solid component with a cylindrical lateral surface and plane-parallel front faces, and projections which interact with the cylindrical lateral surface of the adjusting element in such a way that the latter is held positively or non-positively on the cup-shaped housing are provided on the said cup-shaped housing. ……
