Olefines are dimerized in the presence of a catalyst prepared by (a) contacting a silica gel containing surface hydroxyl groups capable of ionizing and exchanging, or a material containing silica gel, with an aqueous ionic solution of a salt of aluminium whereby ions are incorporated on the oxide surface, (b) contacting the oxide, before or after step (a), with a solution containing nickel ions to incorporate nickel on the oxide surface and (c) oxidizing the catalyst after steps (a) and (b). Olefines of up to 20 carbons are dimerized at 50-400 DEG C. and a GHSV of 50-5,000.ALSO:An olefin dimerisation catalyst is prepared by (a) contacting a silica gel containing surface hydroxyl groups capable of ionising and exchanging, or a material containing silica gel, with an aqueous ionic solution of a salt of aluminium whereby ions are incorporated on the oxide surface, (b) contacting oxide, before or after step (a) with a solution containing nickel ions to incorporate nickel on the oxide surface and (c) oxidising the catalyst after steps (a) and (b). Based on the silica base the weight of aluminium ions is 0.1-3% and of nickel 0.1-10%. Aluminium is preferably introduced by ion-exchange and nickel by ion-exchange or impregnation. Oxidation is effected in air or oxygen at 200-600 DEG C. |
