<p>Gasoline compositions comprise a major proportion of a hydrocarbon fuel of gasoline boiling range and 0.001-1.5 wt. per cent of a salt formed between an alkyl orthophosphoric acid, the or each alkyl group of which is C8-18, and a branched-chain alkyl amine of formula <FORM:1068795/C4-C5/1> where R1 is a straight-chain C1-3 alkyl group, R2 is a straight-chain C5-22 alkyl group, R1 and R2 together totalling 8-23 carbon atoms, and R3 and R4, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl groups, or hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, polyaminoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl-aminoalkyl, heterocyclically substituted alkyl or polyethoxy amine groups, in which each alkyl group is C2-6, nitrogen is the hetero atom or atoms in the heterocyclic ring, or R3 and R4 are joined together to form with the nitrogen atom a heterocyclic ring optionally containing a further nitrogen atom. The salts are usually added to the gasoline in the form of a concentrate in a solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon, or an alcohol, or a mixture thereof, and the final compositions may also contain anti-knock agents, e.g. TML or TEL, and a light mineral lubricating oil, e.g. petroleum spray oil.</p> |
