Fibres or filaments of a ceramic substance which does not have a substantial viscous range are produced by reducing the ceramic to a molten state and applying pressure to cause it to pass through an orifice, the temperature of the molten ceramic prior to extrusion being such that it will solidify as soon as possible after leaving the orifice whilst it is in the form of a filament and yet leave the orifice free from blockage. The pressure may be applied by a gas for instance an inert gas or by a piston-like member. The ceramic may be melted in a closed refractory vessel, preferably of tungsten, which has an orifice through which the ceramic can pass the melting being accomplished by at least one electrical resistance heater. The ceramic substance may be Al2O3, MgO or ZrO2.
