Ribosome inactivating protein (RIB) having a mol mass of 31 kDa+/- 0.4 DA (by SDS-PAGE), an IEP of 8 to 9 and the N-terminal aminoacid sequence Asp-Ile-Ala-Leu-Asp-Leu-Ser-Thr- Ala-Thr-(Lys)-Ala-Ser-Tyr- Ser-Ala-Phe-Ile-Thr-His-(Trp)-Arg-Asn, is claimed. Also claimed is a RIB isolation method by (a) isolation of plant parts, in particular of seeds of Cucurbita varieties, and their pulverisation by grinding; (b) extn. of (a) with lipophilic, organic solvents; (c) extn. of the dried residue with a salt contg. buffer; (d) enrichment of proteins from (c); (e) enrichment of the basic protein fractions by anionic exchange chromatography; and (f) purificn. by gel filtration of the fractions active in the ribosome inhibition test.
