A torque sensor for measuring static torque on a rotating shaft includes two sets of detectable elements (12, 14) mechanically coupled to the shaft (10) and a moveable sensor (30). The detectable elements (12, 14) can be ferromagnetic teeth where the circumferential spacing between the reference (14) and torque (12) set of teeth corresponds to shaft torque and will vary as a function of the applied torque. The sensor (30) has an output that varies as a function of the sensor position relative to the ferromagnetic teeth (12, 14). The torque applied to the shaft (10) can hence be monitored. <IMAGE>
