The investigation of indoor air quality (IAQ) complaints is complex since, unlike industrial settings, there is no obvious source of contaminants. In general, though, the sources of contamination fall into one of three categories - gases/vapours, particulates and microbial material. This patent application relates to the investigation of contamination by gases and vapours. The most popular, current investigative techniques for addressing gas and vapourcontamination are: i) to test for carbon dioxide as an estimation of fresh air supply, and ii) to postulate what gas is present and may be causing the problem and test for that gas. Once the presence of the gas is verified, attempts are made to identify and eliminate the source. This new technique uses a different logic. Rather than postulating the identity of a specific gas, this technique uses a detector sensitive to minute quantities of numerous chemicals to track sources of any chemical so that they may be addressed. The key points of the technique are: 1) it does not focus on any particular gas or vapour. Anything which is detected by the instrument is tracked to its source and eliminated. In most investigators there is usually no determination of the actual identity of the offending gas; 2) it relies on a meter with both a fast response time and a sensitive detector; 3) the evaluation is usually completed within a matter of hours.
