In a process for lasting ingots in which molten metal and molten flux are poured into an ingot mould, the composition of a suitable flux comprises 30-40% Aluminium oxide, 32-40% Calcium oxide, 6-8% titanium oxide, 8-12% silica, 3-6% magnesium oxide, 4-8% Calcium fluoride and 2-7% Sodium oxide in such proportions that the flux has a melting temperature of 1260-1370 DEG C. Other fluxes may be used including the above - an addition of cryolite or alkali or alkaline earth fluorides, chlorides or oxides. The process is used particularly for casting iron and/or nickel base alloys such as the following;- 4.5-35% by weight of molybdenum or chromium, or both, 0.05-3.5% of titanium, 0.01-0.5% carbon, up to 35% cobalt, up to 6% niobium plus tantalum, up to 1% vanadum, up to 6% tungsten, up to 6% copper, up to 4% Aluminium up to 2.5% Manganese, up to 2% silicon the remainder comprising not less than 40% of nickel or iron or both. |
