[Also in Division G4] Printing apparatus is used to record the score of each frame in ten-pin bowling. Electric pulses are used to set the three print wheels which form a mechanical counter mechanism, movement of one wheel from nine to zero moving the next higher digit through one position. A fourth print wheel has indications of" strikes " and " spares." Since these require a further ball or balls to be bowled before their score is complete, the printing surfaces for spares and strikes extend beyond the level of those for the score. Thus a spare or strike can be indicated, the score not being printed until later. The printing surface 304 is made of translucent material and is coated with an opaque coating which is removed when struck by a print wheel. A paper cover 345 is provided to prevent the print characters from being covered with the coating removed from the surface 304. The apparatus comprises a tray 302 to which the printing surface is clipped and which slides under the control of arms 310, 312 moved by a motor, not shown. The tray can be stopped in one of a number of positions under the control of the electronic circuitry so that each frame is recorded in its correct position. It can also be moved to the left (as viewed in Fig. 5) to enable the results to be projected on a screen immediately the score for a particular frame has been printed. The paper cover 345 slides between guides 346, 347 as the tray moves to the left. The print wheels 422 are mounted on a shaft 428 urged downward relatively to the printing head by springs 429. The printing head pivots on shaft 335 and is swung into the printing position by an arm 338 forming the core of a solenoid 337. The printing wheels strike the paper cover 345, and thus remove the coating from a printing surface which rests on flexible supports 319 and then move upwards with the shaft 428 against the springs 429 until the opposite character strikes a bar 440 fixed to the printing head. Thus the force is transmitted through the print wheels rather than through the shaft 428 as is customary.
