A self-contained current limiter unit allows lower short-circuit rated circuit breakers to be utilized within industrial applications. The current limiter unit includes a rating module in the form of a positive temperature coefficient material connected in series with an ohmic resistor. The rating module is connected in parallel with the current limiter components to limit short current to a fixed value. A circuit breaker connected in series with the current limiter unit responds to interrupt the circuit current. Additional rating modules are connected in a ladder logic array to meet the distribution circuit short-circuit rating requirements.
