A method for detecting concentrations of pollutants present underground (in the soil), the pollution comprising a substantial amount of compounds such as oil, benzene or the like, whose electrical characteristics deviate from the corresponding characteristics of unpolluted soil, comprises the following steps: 1. the soil is irradiated with electromagnetic radiation; 2. radiation reflected by the soil is received; and 3. said reflected radiation is compared with radiation reflected by unpolluted soil.
