1,073,076. Artificial heart valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1965 [Dec. 31, 1964], No. 53104/64. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2] A one-way valve to be implanted in the heart comprises a ring-shaped member 1 the opening in which is adapted to be closed by a bi-convex member 2, the movement of the closure member 2 away from the ring member 1 being limited by a large guide member 5 and two smaller guide members 6. A bioligically inert mesh 9 of polyproylene reinforced with a ring 7 of stainless steel or a synthetic resin material is fitted into a channel in the ring-shaped member 1 so that fibrosis can occur between the natural heart tissue and the mesh 9 when the valve has been implanted. A recess in the inner surface of the ring member 1 receives the large guide member 5 to prevent relative rotation of ring-shaped member and the closure member. In an alternative embodiment (Figures 4-6, not shown), two guide members are formed larger than a third guide member and a projection on the inner surface of the ring-shaped member between the larger guide members prevents relative rotation. The valve components are of biologically inert material and suitable metal and synthetic resin materials are exemplified.
|
